Abstract
Many Koreans have purchased private health insurance (PHI) together with enrollment in social health insurance and many of them have had multiple PHI. This study examined determinants of the number of PHI in Korea. The subjects were a national random sample of the aged 45 or older from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing in 2006, and 9,585 samples were used for the analysis. An ordered probit regression model was applied to examine determinants of the number of PHI in terms of the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, health status and health behaviors. Thirty-three percent of the individuals purchased PHI. About 17 percent of the total samples had one PHI and 16 percent of them purchased multiple PHI. Female, the younger, or the educated had more PHI. Individuals who have more children were less likely to have PHI. Employment, private transfer, or total household asset was inclined to have more PHI. Those who self-assessed their health status as better conditions tended to have more PHI. Experiences of accident were positively related to have more PHI, and a chronic disease was the opposite. Drinking or regular exercise had positive relationship with increasing numbers of PHI. This study might be the first approach to examine the number of purchasing PHI in consideration of the coverage expansion, and found meaningful characteristics in having PHI. It is also encouraging that determinants in Korean cultural contexts such as the number of children or private transfer were considered to having PHI.
